Annual Spiritual Retreat - February 2007

Immersing Yourself in the Spirit

How does one capture the powerful feelings and thoughts that come in the midst of Ebenezer’s Spirituality Retreat? How do we who attended integrate these news epiphanies into our spiritual cores? The Christian Education Committee wants to thank those who added to the experience and to note some of the comments of those who attended.

On February 9-10, forty Ebenezer members and friends gathered on this cold weekend at the beautiful Techny Conference Center enjoying their hospitality, good beds, and delicious food. Several of our members and friends gave scholarship money so others could attend the retreat. David Miller, from Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago was the retreat leader.

Some comments from those who attended:

"Our retreat leader David helped me to see God in everyday places, both those of joys and sorrows. I was reminded that God is continuously inviting me and all humankind into an intimate relationship which is predicated on His unwavering love and devotion. Thank you Dave and the members of the Christian Education Committee for helping me to more fully appreciate daily examples of God’s love, grace, and mercy."
– Dan

“It was a very gratifying weekend for me. During one moment, I felt a presence around me that drew a little tear. I mentioned this to our leader while we were waiting to take the group photo and he rested his hand on mine and I closed my eyes and said, '“Thank you, God.'" I wish I could wrap this all in a little pocket and keep it close to me.”
– Ada

“When I first considered the spirituality retreat, I wasn’t sure it would work with my kids. But when we arrived at Techny it turned out to be totally fine. A play room was set up next door, full of toys and new friends. In the end, I was able to rise above the chaos of my day-to-day life and contemplate some larger issues. I met lots of new people and had lots of interesting conversations. The singing was wonderful and I walked away with some handouts for further reading.”
– Jen

“One of the many gifts I received at the Ebenezer annual retreat this year is this: At the end of the retreat we were singing a hymn inviting God to take us where we need to be in our lives, going forward trusting God. I realized that I was singing the hymn surrounded by people about whom I understood what that would mean in their individual lives, and that they would understand what it meant in mine. We knew more about the hopes and struggles we each were living with.”
– Ingrid

“As a first time attendee of the retreat, I was most grateful for the schedule and topics for exploration beforehand. The experiences lived by others, including our retreat leader, Rev. Miller, in small groups and with the whole group opened up new relationships and connections with the Holy Spirit through the connections with people as we learned to hear the voice of God in everyday living. Our singing and dance line to “We are Marching in the Light of God” was a celebration of God’s family coming together to experience God’s love in fellowship and community with one another.”
– Vikki

“Being at the retreat this weekend for the first time was a very moving experience for me. I got to know many of the church membership on a closer more spiritual level.”
